Georgia Now Requires Insurance To Enter the Country

This policy became effective as of January 1, 2026.

All visitors who enter the country of Georgia are required to provide proof of valid health and accident insurance coverage effective as of Thursday, January 1, 2026. The coverage amount must be no less than ₾30,000.00 and cover the full period of stay in Georgia. The policy may be issued by an  insurance company either in Georgia or from another country.

Georgia Now Requires Insurance To Enter the Country

The following text was copied verbatim from the official Internet web site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia:

In accordance with the Law of Georgia “On Tourism”, starting from January 01, 2026, all tourists entering Georgia are required to hold a valid health and accident insurance policy. Any tourist entering the territory of Georgia must present a valid health and accident insurance policy in either physical or electronic form and must be available in Georgian or English.

The insurance policy may be issued by either a Georgian or a foreign insurance company, and the insurance coverage amount must be no less than 30 000 GEL.

The insurance policy must contain the following mandatory information:

  • Parties to the insurance contract;
  • Covered territory;
  • Subject matter of the insurance;
  • Commencement and expiration dates of the insurance coverage;
  • Insured risks;
  • Amount of the insurance sum (limits);
  • Amount of the insurance premium, place and terms of payment.

The insurance policy is required to cover the full period of a tourist’s stay in Georgia, including both arrival and departure dates.

The following persons are exempt from mandatory requirement of insurance:

  • Holders of diplomatic and special visas;
  • Holders of diplomatic, official, service and special passports;
  • Accredited employees of diplomatic missions, consular representations, representation offices of international organizations and equivalent representation offices, as well as their family members who hold an accreditation;
  • Persons whose entering to Georgia is envisaged by International Treaties and Agreements of Georgia;
  • Drivers engaged in international road freight and passenger transportation.

I was supposed to have arrived in Georgia as this article was published. Unfortunately, I did not get that opportunity. The details as to the reasons why are revealed in this article.

I happened to find out about this new policy by accident. It was never brought to my attention despite having purchased airline tickets to Georgia.
