Highway A1 in Botswana. Sunday Morning Photograph.

This highway is well paved and a smooth drive.

Highway A1 in Botswana is one of the main highways in this country in Southern Africa. It stretches along the eastern part of the country. You can drive north northeast to the border Botswana shares with Zimbabwe. You can also drive south southwest to the border Botswana shares with South Africa.

Little more than one of the main streets in the capital city of Gaborone, Highway A1 is similar to a boulevard. Parts of the road were under construction when I visited and stayed at the Cresta President Hotel property.

North of Gaborone but south of Rasesa — where the Matsieng Footprints are located — Highway A1 resembles an Interstate highway in the United States with two lanes in each direction and divided by a grassy median.

The drive south of Gaborone to Ramatlabama near the Kopfontein border crossing at South Africa is mostly flat — except for a few hills. Some of the hills were of strange shapes. The highway itself was only two lanes wide.

As I approached near Ramatlabama, the weather quickly changed, as a thunderstorm was looming. To me, the name Ramatlabama sounds like Atlanta and Alabama being rammed together. Then again, I was in the Southeast — that is, the southeastern part of Botswana.

Final Boarding Call

Highway A1 in Botswana takes on at least three different characteristics — depending on what section you drive. Every section on which I drove was well paved and smooth. Thank goodness, as I had enough of potholes at that point because one gave my rental car a flat tire.

I have always enjoyed taking photographs of highways and the traffic signs along them. That first started in the United States; but it expanded to other countries when I started traveling.

The purpose of the weekly series of Sunday Morning Photograph articles is to feature photographs from my travels around the world which you can view while enjoying your morning coffee.
