Major Hurricane Lidia to Impact Central Mexico: October 2023 Travel Alert

Due to the effects from major Hurricane Lidia to impact central Mexico October 2023, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — if central Mexico is in your travel plans over the next few days.

Major Hurricane Lidia to Impact Central Mexico: October 2023 Travel Alert

Maximum sustained winds of Hurricane Lidia — which is currently approximately 115 miles southwest of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and moving east northeast at a speed of 16 miles per hour — are at 125 miles per hour, which means that it is currently a strong Category 3 hurricane with a well defined eye. Landfall of this hurricane is expected later this evening, Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for:

  • Las Islas Marias
  • Manzanillo to El Roblito

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • El Roblito to Mazatlan
  • Punta San Telmo to Manzanillo

Significant precipitation of up to 12 inches is possible in local areas across the state Nayarit, southern portions of the state of Sinaloa, and coastal portions of the state of Jalisco in western Mexico.

Rough surf and strong rip currents are currently affecting the western coast of central Mexico. A dangerous storm surge is expected to result in significant coastal flooding near and to the south of where landfall of the hurricane occurs. The surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves near the coast.

Flight Waivers, Delays, and Cancellations

If you are traveling to or from central Mexico over the next few days, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this tropical weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary. If you are driving in any of these areas, watch out for deteriorating weather conditions and traffic problems.
