I Am On My Way To Antarctica.

The dream is finally coming true for me.

As the SH Minerva currently lilts its way steadily through the Drake Passage, the sun has been intermittently peeking through the clouds as I am on my way to Antarctica.

We departed early from an unusually sunny and fairly warm afternoon in Ushuaia at 5:43 yesterday, Tuesday, December 3, 2025 and spent the rest of the evening moving forward through the calm waters of Beagle Channel on our way to the open waters of the Southern Ocean.

A storm system to the west prompted the captain of the vessel to venture in a southeasterly direction before heading due south tomorrow morning towards the Antarctic Peninsula, where we will spend four days. Only 74 passengers are aboard the ship, which is operated by Swan Hellenic — and I have enjoyed making the acquaintance of every passenger whom I have met so far.

Final Boarding Call

My expectations with Swan Hellenic have already been wildly exceeded. The stateroom is almost as large as a typical hotel suite; and is quite comfortable and well appointed. Every member of the crew has gone out of his or her way to ensure that all details are met — whether those details pertain to customer satisfaction or to adamantly protecting the environment once we arrive in Antarctica — and the service has been nothing short of phenomenal.

If you have been following The Gate With Brian Cohen, you have known that I have wanted to go to Antarctica for years.

Consider this short article an introduction to that dream, which is finally coming true…

  1. I know of someone that was on such a cruise and had an eye problem. The ship’s doctor did not have expertise in ophthalmology. The passenger suffered and was eventually seen by an ophthalmologist in Ushuaia, Argentina.

I would expect a city of 80,000 people to have more than one ophthalmologist but not all of the 6 sub-specialties (cornea, glaucoma, retina or uveitis, pediatrics, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology).

  2. You are very blessed to have the opportunity to do this. My wife and I hope to be able to afford to do this some day, on a kosher cruise.

    1. Do they have Kosher cruises to Antarctica, Barry Graham?

I understand that someone on the vessel on which I took to Antarctica was constantly questioning members of the staff about whether or not the food was Kosher — but I do not know the entire story behind that…

      1. Hi Brian, they do have kosher cruises, and I think it must be possible to get kosher food on any cruise, although it could be TV dinners. I heard that there are now a limited number of cruises to other places that have the kosher food prepared on the ship.

On the other hand, waiting until you are on the cruise before asking if they have kosher food seems a little late. I hope they didn’t mean that question the way it appeared, and that they had already booked kosher food.

        1. I would think that the Kosher meals would be required to be sealed in their own trays, Barry Graham, as I cannot imaging a ship being able to have the capacity to handle two Kosher kitchens for meat and dairy — let alone being able to successfully keep the Kosher food separated from the traif.

I am surprised that there is enough of a market to support Kosher cruises…

          1. For the cruises with kosher food prepared on the ship, they actually have kosher supervised kitchens, i.e. they are effectively kosher supervised restaurants. See here https://freshkosher.cruises/

I hope my wife and I will one day be able to afford to participate in one.

  3. I’m leaving on the same trip with Swan on January 6th. Looking forward to reading of your adventures prior to my trip. Enjoy!
