I recently had ice cream that was so good, the line winds around outside at this creamery that dubs itself “farm to cone” with flavors that are sourced with local ingredients.
Ice Cream So Good, The Line Winds Around Outside.
This place was chosen simply on a whim and not on the apparently strong reputation that it has among the locals in Omaha for great ice cream. As I waited in line while reading the ingredients aloud and thinking I might go for Tart Cherry Crumble ice cream, a woman who was standing in front of me while we were still waiting in line outside said that that was her favorite flavor.
“Tart Cherry Crumble?” I repeated.
“Yes”, she replied definitively with a huge smile. One of the women who was with her said that this place has the best ice cream.
“This long line apparently attests to that”, I said — to which she nodded with a grin.
The creamery is called Coneflower Creamery and is the brainchild of “scoopologist” and co-owner Brian Langbehn, whose dream was to open a farm to table ice cream shop.
As I was trying to figure out which flavor I wanted, I saw that they offer a large cup that can hold up to four flavors. I did not need to taste any of the flavors. I knew what I wanted:
- Tart Cherry Crumble
- Dark Chocolate
- Grandma Minnie’s Lemon Bar
- Toasted Coconut
To top off this concoction, I also ordered a topping of Amarena Cherries.
I sat down at a small table and started sampling my ice cream. The flavors were boldly intense and real. Grandma Minnie’s Lemon Bar was unapologetically tart and full of lemon flavor. When the cherry topping mixed with the Toasted Coconut and the robust Dark Chocolate flavors, it created a taste sensation that was reminiscent of a much better version of the Cherry Ripe candy bar that is popular in Australia. The Tart Cherry Crumble was an ambrosia of tart cherries with crumbled pastry mixed together and elevated by the Amarena Cherry topping.
This was an amazing cup of ice cream — one of the best ice cream experiences which I have ever had. Each bit tasted fresh, refreshing, natural, and full of flavors that were not timid by any stretch of the imagination. This is what ice cream should be all about and not some tepid milky pale confection.
I also sampled the following flavors:
- Roasted Pistachio — This is not your sweet Chinese restaurant offering. Rather, this is real pistachio flavor with a note of salt in a smooth blend will have any pistachio aficionado craving for more.
- Archetype Coffee — Forget iced coffee. Go next level with this flavor.
- Black Walnut Chip — This flavor is packed with walnuts and chocolate chips. If you enjoy eating walnuts with chocolate, this flavor is for you.
No flavor is false advertising. Weak milquetoast palates need not apply.
Final Boarding Call
I did not really do much research in finding dessert that evening after dinner. I knew nothing about Coneflower Creamery. It just sounded like a decent place to have dessert within walking distance of the hotel property at which I was staying.
I highly recommend Coneflower Creamery, as it was much, much more than a decent place to have ice cream. The service was excellent as well — but be prepared to wait in line, which should give you enough time to decide on which flavors of ice cream to order. The ice cream was well worth the wait.
