Watching Emirates Airline A380 Airplane Take Off in Sydney — From the Air.

The airplane on which I was a passenger was simultaneously landing.

Watching an Airbus A380 airplane that was operated by Emirates Airline take off from Sydney Airport from the air — while the airplane on which I was a passenger was simultaneously landing — came abruptly but it sure looked pretty cool.

I was a passenger aboard a Boeing 737-800 airplane that was operated by Qantas Airways from Brisbane to Sydney…

…and we were on the final approach to land at the airport, which was very busy at that time…

…when I noticed an Airbus A380 airplane that was operated by Emirates Airline outside the window that was taking off on the runway.

I immediately grabbed my camera and started taking photographs — with no time to even switch it to video mode.

The airport was drenched with rain on that gloomy and cloudy day…

…save for the sun peeking through the clouds and lighting up the airplane as it was taking off.

The speeds and movements of both airplanes — combined with the unstable air from the clouds and the rain — created a trying situation that resulted in photography being difficult to do in general; so the photographs were not near the quality that I would have liked…

…but one dictum of photography is to shoot now and figure it all out later, as having photographs of poor quality is better than having no photographs at all — at least, in most situations.

The Airbus A380 airplane was airborne at this time — likely headed to Dubai, which is the home airport of Emirates Airline.

Round trip flights to Dubai from the United States start at $865.00 per person for travel through Thursday, November 26, 2026 when purchasing tickets by Thursday, February 19, 2026.

I have been to the city of Dubai itself — especially Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, among other places — but I have never been to Dubai International Airport.

I hope to one day be a passenger aboard an Airbus A380 airplane that is operated by Emirates Airline to experience the product and the service, as I still have never been aboard an Airbus A380.
