As I was driving eastbound along Mississippi State Highway 12 in Starkville, I noticed a road sign which caught my attention; and I immediately pulled my vehicle over onto the grassy area off the shoulder to take a photograph with my camera…

What is Wrong With This Photograph? Part 23

…and I found at least one thing which seemed quite bizarre, as shown in the photograph above.

  1. People would probably wonder why the Grant (Union general who took Vicksburg) library is at Mississippi State University.
    I’ve been there. (Former MSU faculty.) The facility and the collection are fantastic!

    1. This was going to be my guess as well. I actually filmed the historian interviews in Starkville for this library (technically, I did the audio, but you know what I mean). The interviews were FASCINATING! I haven’t visited the completed museum…was only there for the taping…so I hope the finished product turned out well, and I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it, Denise.

    2. It makes me think of Robert E. Lee’s Custis-Lee Mansion, which was occupied by the Union Army during the Civil War. They then built Arlington Cemetery on the property (supposedly to keep him from ever returning) . Then it was renamed the Arlington House.

      I still find the language on the National Park Service web sites strange. It has “Arlington House is the nation’s memorial to Robert E. Lee. It honors him for specific reasons, including his role in promoting peace and reunion after the Civil War.”

      The Lee family did win a Supreme Court case for the return of the property. The federal government then bought it for $150,000.

  2. At first I thought it was the brown and green sign colors combined, but I found other examples. Is that MSU logo brown rather than maroon? It’s tough to tell.

    Otherwise I’m stumped.

  3. The Mississippi State University logo is wrong. The one used on the sign is an athletics ‘spirit wordmark’ stylized logo; sign should have instead their ‘official university signature’ wordmark and ‘M-State’ symbol, as articulated on the Mississippi State University visual identity standards page: http://www.brand.msstate.edu/identity/index.php

  6. There shouldn’t be a period after the letter S in Ulysses Grant’s name. It wasn’t an initial, because it didn’t stand for anything.
