As kitschy as they may be, wooden directional signs in Fiji — or anywhere in the world, for that matter — add a curious element to a location in which one finds himself or herself and causes that person to ponder just how far away he or she is from elsewhere on our planet.

No one definitively knows the origin of these types of signs — which are also known as fingerposts or guideposts — but they may question the accuracy of them.

Trivia time: Directional signs are the oldest type of road sign: Plutarch — who was a philosopher from Greece — wrote about milestones being placed 24 centuries ago in the third century Before the Common Era; while some fingerposts in the United Kingdom date back to at least the 1690s.
