Although the first bathing box was built in the 1860s further along the coastline of Brighton, which was built to serve as a changing room to maintain the modesty of bathers….

..most of the bathing boxes that are located at Dendy Street Beach were built between 1907 and 1933.

None of the structures are connected to electricity or running water. They are still used as changing rooms; but they are also used to store beach equipment and for gatherings of family and friends.

Final Boarding Call

I now have been to Brighton Beach in three locations around the world: in Brooklyn in the United States; in England in the United Kingdom; and now in Australia.

Unfortunately, the Brighton Bathing Boxes are privately owned — but the good news is that visitors are welcome to photograph them. They may even sit on the steps of one of them when the owner is not present.

Motorists who drive to Brighton Beach can park on the street or in the somewhat small parking lot for a fee — although one can park for a limited amount of time for free; and no fee is charged after 8:00 in the evening.
