Meusnier Point is only one of the many places that the crabeater seal can be found along the coast around the entire continent of Antarctica.

This crabeater seal uses free-floating pack ice as a platform to rest. The pack ice is also used for mating, social aggregation, and accessing their prey — although leopard seals prey on the young pups of crabeater seals.

Trivia time: Despite the name, crabeater seals do not eat crabs. Their diet consists chiefly of krill, which is rich in the waters of the Southern Ocean. The scientific name for this mammal is Lobodon carcinophaga. A crabeater seal can be up to 7.5 feet in length and weigh as much as 660 pounds. Female crabeater seals average approximately 18 pounds heavier than their male counterparts.
