“Y esterday JetBlue announced its 88th destination – Cleveland, Ohio”, according to this article posted at Points, Miles & Martinis. “It will launch a twice daily non-stop service between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) on April 30, 2015. JetBlue is selling an introductory one-way fare of $19.51, a reference to the year that a Cleveland area DJ helped popularize the music, and the term rock ‘n’ roll to describe it. The fare is available between April 30 and June 18, 2015, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays with no black out dates, but introductory fare tickets much be purchased by December 10, 2014.”
Meanwhile, this article posted by Summer Hull at Mommy Points announces that Cleveland is the newest destination to be served by Spirit Airlines: “Today they are giving away 10,000 miles in Cleveland at Tower City Center from 11AM – 2PM.”
Perhaps this burst of activity is because of the apparent vacuum left by United Airlines when Cleveland Hopkins International Airport was officially declared no longer a hub airport of United Airlines as of Thursday, June 5, 2014.
Could this mean that airlines such as JetBlue and Spirit may in the future target such airports which have been “de-hubbed” by a legacy airline — such as Memphis by Delta Air Lines; and Pittsburgh by US Airways? What are your thoughts?
