Tony’s Lord Nelson Steak House in Auckland. Restaurant Review.

This restaurant was established in 1978.

Since it was established in 1978, Tony’s Lord Nelson Restaurant is one of the oldest surviving restaurants in Auckland. The restaurants at the hotel property at which I was staying closed at 8:00 in the evening. Tony’s Lord Nelson Restaurant was one of the few options for me within walking distance at that late hour.

The interior of the restaurant was rather dark, which I did not mind. Seating options were rather private.

What I did mind very much was the cigarette smoke. Smoking was not allowed in the restaurant; but the front door was open and someone was smoking a cigarette outside.

I was not in the mood to breathe in cigarette smoke while I was dining — I am never in the mood for that, actually — so I finally convinced the servers to close the front door by stating that I was going to walk out instead of dine in the restaurant.

The Cold Smoked Salmon was described as “Delicate portions of NZ’s best, scented with aquavit and dill”. A salad was ordered as the side dish. $40.00 in New Zealand dollars

I was not in the mood for steak that night due to my experience at this restaurant in Rotorua. Besides, I was in the mood for seafood.

Two Potato Croquettes were ordered to accompany the Garlic Prawn Cutlets, which were described as “Skewered and grilled rapidly, a real treat”. $40.00 in New Zealand dollars

The Garlic Prawn Cutlets were served on a bed of yellow rice.

For some reason, one of the mirrored panels near the entrance of the dining establishment features the Pan Am logo from Pan American Airways, which is now defunct.

Final Boarding Call

Although the prices are a bit expensive, I recommend dining at Tony’s Lord Nelson Steak House in Auckland for a quick bite to eat. The food was good — but not outstanding — and the service was decent. This dining experience sufficed before returning to the hotel property at which I was staying.

The total cost of the meal that was highlighted in this article was $49.22 in United States dollars.
