If various portions of the United States are in your travel plans over the next couple of days or so, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to the latest weather systems which will affect completely different areas of the United States…
Travel Alert June 2022: Severe Weather Affects…Everywhere?!?
…and the bizarre part is that each airline has basically issued its own travel waivers which the others do not share — so here goes…
First, the National Weather Service issued a tropical storm watch for parts of South Florida as a tropical system is currently strengthening and is forecast to deliver torrential rain — regardless of whether it strengthens into a depression or even a tropical storm — to cities such as Golden Gate, Key Largo, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, as the tropical storm watch is in effect for:
- West coast of Florida south of the Middle of Longboat Key
- East coast of Florida south of the Volusia/Brevard County Line
- Florida Keys including the Dry Tortugas
- Lake Okeechobee
- Florida Bay
- Cuban provinces of Matanzas, Mayabeque, Havana, Artemisa, Pinar
del Rio, and the Isle of Youth
As much as twelve inches of rain is expected to fall in some local areas — as well as gusty winds of up to 60 miles per hour and frequent bursts of intense lightning — due to strong thunderstorms from this tropical system, which will be named Alex if it becomes a tropical storm. Expect a storm surge of up to three feet as this tropical system strengthens.
Meanwhile, severe weather is expected for the mid-Atlantic region of the United States — as well as the greater New York metropolitan area and the Metroplex of Dallas and Fort Worth. Severe thunderstorms are expected to affect an area from northeastern Georgia all the way to northern New Jersey, with cities such as Wilmington, Baltimore, Dover, Richmond, Annapolis, Norfolk, and the District of Columbia bearing the brunt of this weather system; but cities such as Philadelphia, Roanoke, Atlantic City, and Charleston are forecast to also experience some of the the adverse effects. Expect heavy downpours of precipitation, flooding, hail, and damaging wind gusts of up to 75 miles per hour in some local areas — but the heat should also diminish somewhat temporarily.
Travel will definitely be disrupted with either delays or cancellations of flights.
Expect highways and roadways to be temporarily difficult to navigate in some of the affected areas.
Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations
If you are traveling to, from, or within various portions of the United States over the next couple of days or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to these weather systems which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.
If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.
Five airlines have issued travel alerts as a result of these weather systems:
- American Airlines has issued a travel alert for Fort Worth and Dallas for Wednesday, June 1, 2022 through Friday, June 3, 2022; and Tuesday, June 7, 2022 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Delta Air Lines has issued travel alerts for seven airports in southern Florida for Friday, June 3, 2022 through Saturday, June 4, 2022; and Tuesday, June 7, 2022 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- United Airlines has issued travel alerts for eight airports in five states for Thursday, June 2, 2022 through Friday, June 3, 2022; and Tuesday, June 7, 2022 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Air Canada has issued travel alerts for five airports in five states for Thursday, June 2, 2022.
- Porter Airlines has issued a travel alert for Newark for Thursday, June 2, 2022.
Final Boarding Call
Rarely do airlines issue travel alerts which are issued for the same time but for completely different weather systems; but that is the case today.
Be sure to contact your airline or transportation provider for the latest information pertaining to your travels — if they are adversely affected — and please: travel safely.
