If Shanghai is in your travel plans over the next ten days, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information — due to the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic, as Shanghai Pudong International Airport is part of two stages of shutdowns by the government of China.
Travel Alert March 2022: Shanghai Airport Travel Restrictions
Although the metropolis of 25 million people is not expected to experience a complete lockdown, its airports and seaports will be nearly impossible to access due to a spike in cases which involve the Omicron variant of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus. In addition to flights, cargo transportation, manufacturing, and various forms of shipping are expected to either be substantially reduced or temporarily canceled altogether.
Millions of residents were reportedly ordered to stay indoors during the lockdowns; and all employees of businesses and personnel of the government who are not involved in the supply of essential services were advised to work from home — especially as buses, taxis, and the extensive subway system of the city would cease operations.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations
If you are traveling to or from Shanghai over the next ten delays, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this situation which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.
If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.
Here are two airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of this situation:
- Delta Air Lines has issued a travel alert for Shanghai for Monday, March 28, 2022 through Wednesday, April 6, 2022; and Thursday, April 14, 2022 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- United Airlines has issued a travel alert for Shanghai for Monday, March 28, 2022 through Wednesday, April 6, 2022; and Thursday, April 14, 2022 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
