This will be the first cyclone to cross the southern coast of Queensland in approximately 50 years.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred to Affect Eastern Australia: March 2025 Travel Alert

Maximum sustained winds of Tropical Cyclone Alfred — which is currently approximately 452 kilometers east of Brisbane and moving west at a speed of eleven kilometers per hour — are at 95 kilometers per hour, which means that it is the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane. Landfall is expected to occur close to Brisbane on the coast of eastern Australia as soon as the evening of Thursday, March 6, 2025 and become the first cyclone to cross the southern coast of Queensland in approximately 50 years.

Because it will continue west inland after landfall, Tropical Cyclone Albert will quickly weaken to a tropical low pressure system.

A Cyclone Warning is in effect from Double Island Point in Queensland to Grafton in New South Wales — including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, and Ballina; but not including Grafton.

Substantial precipitation is possible across southeast Queensland and northeastern New South Wales, which is expected to result in potentially life-threatening flash flooding. Abnormally high tides, destructive wind gusts, and dangerous storm surges are also expected as a result.
