The latest winter storm update for the northeastern United States January 2024 includes additional airlines issuing travel waivers to customers — so due to the latest weather system, consider ensuring that you have alternate travel plans ready to be implemented.
Winter Storm Update for Northeastern United States: January 2024 Travel Alert
The following statement is currently posted at the official Internet web site of the National Weather Service of the United States:
Winter Storm to Impact the East; Powerful System Moving into the West; Alaska Storm This Weekend
A very active weather pattern from Alaska to the eastern seaboard this weekend. First, a strong storm will impact the Aleutians to southern Alaska with strong winds and heavy precipitation. Another strong low pressure system will track southward from Alaska into the West Coast with strong winds and mountain snow. For the east coast, a winter storm will bring heavy rain, snow and strong winds.
The map of the United States from the National Weather Service looks very different from that of yesterday, as it indicates that winter weather advisories, winter storm warnings, winter storm watches, and hazardous weather outlooks have been issued from extreme northeastern Georgia all the way to southern Maine…
…but the watches and warnings will likely increase, as this winter weather system is expected to affect southeastern Indiana, extreme western North Carolina, and extreme eastern Tennessee all the way to Newfoundland. As much as 20 inches of snow could accumulate in local areas of the southern part of the state of New York, northern Massachusetts, extreme southern Vermont, and extreme southern New Hampshire. Expect travel conditions to be substantially difficult; and expect outages of electrical power.
Moreover, icy conditions may occur from southwestern North Carolina to central Pennsylvania; and significant rainfall is expected in many areas of the southeastern United States.
A low pressure system is currently tracking across the southeastern United States and will emerge over the western part of the northern Atlantic Ocean as early as late tonight, Friday, January 5, 2024 to become a classic “Nor’easter”, which is generally a large-scale extratropical cyclone that is positioned off of the coast of the northeastern United States.
The good news is that most of the major cities in the northeastern United States will not experience significant accumulations of snow; but they will be affected by the winter storm.
