“An ETA is not a visa, it is a digital permission to travel”, according to the official Internet web site of the government of the United Kingdom. “In 2023, visitors from the USA, Canada, and Australia alone contributed £8.8 billion to the UK economy, supporting the UK’s tourist industry and boosting local businesses across the country. ETAs will enhance security through new technology and make the UK border more efficient, preserving the UK’s appeal as a dynamic, diverse, and exciting destination to visit.”

Additionally, an electronic travel authorisation has been required from the following six countries and associated territories since last year:

  • Bahrain

Final Boarding Call

This is simply yet another tax to enter the United Kingdom, in my opinion — and it also requires a few minutes of time that the applicant must invest which was not previously required. I did not need to do anything to visit the United Kingdom two months ago — and if I paid anything extra, the payment was included in my airfare of $84.29 round trip between Dublin and Glasgow with Ryanair…

…or it was included in my fare of $200.10 round trip between Chicago and Dublin with Air France…

  1. This post is an essential read for travelers planning a UK visit. The details on the Electronic Travel Authorization process are clear and helpful, ensuring a smooth travel experience. Great resource!

  2. They try to deny that an ETA is a visa, but the denial of the ETA’s true nature as a visa of sort (i.e., electronic visa) just speaks to an Orwellian double-speak which is too typical of governments nowadays even in so-called open-society countries.

    1. It is a Visa. It’s a return to days past when you had to complete a form and pay to enter other countries. They can call it what they like, but they can’t hide the truth.

  3. President Biden doesn’t fly commercial. When he was Senator for decades, he took the train to his home state of Delaware. He may be out of touch with the air traveler.

If I were President Biden, I would push for reciprocal eta fee waivers for all the visa waiver countries (like the UK, Taiwan,Germany, Australia, Sweden, etc.)

I would also make a deal with VP Harris to resign on the condition or even request that Harris appoints Biden as VP.

    1. Biden flew commercially quite a lot as Senator — more than most readers of this blog. He didn’t stick to just going between Delaware and DC.

And his kids flew commercial quite a lot.

      1. Then he has no excuse to push for a reciprocal eta fee waiver….unless he forgot and can’t remember stuff or is too dykwia.

If Trump wanted to get a fee waiver, and he probably didn’t think of asking, he could threaten to bomb London unless they agree to it.

        1. Since multiple US Admins and Congress have been very happy to more or less scrap VWP type flying and to see more and more countries demand de facto electronic visas and payment for such, the the Biden Admin has no reason to change things unless they are as demented and memory-challenged as Trump.

          1. That’s an interesting comment, considering the reason Harris replaced Biden. The incoming President has his faults, dementia and memory loss are not among them. Can we all please stop making off-topic political statements that do nothing but annoy other readers?

    2. They are not going to do reciprocal waivers, which would defeat the purpose of the ETAs. Your comment about Biden and Harris doesn’t really add to the discussion.
