Seeing a koala in the wild in Australia is a rare occurrence because they are rather shy and do not naturally see human beings as their friends. The best way to see one live is in captivity, which can be done rather easily.

Koalas are marsupials and not bears. The leaves of eucalyptus trees and other eucalypt plants comprise most of their diet. Koalas can be as long as 33 inches and weigh up to 33 pounds. Seeing a koala who is awake is somewhat rare, as they can sleep for up to 20 hours per day.
Although they seem cuddly and cute, koalas are not social animals. Forget about having one as a pet. In fact, koalas can be aggressive and cause scratches and lacerations with their large sharp claws when they feel threatened.

I have a photograph of myself from years ago holding a koala in Australia. I will post that photograph when I find it. Holding a koala is no longer permitted in the state of New South Wales, which is where I was located at the time the photographs in this article were taken.
