Sunday Morning Photograph July 31 2022: Tunnel Gnalp-Steg in Liechtenstein.

Brian Cohen had tunnel vision that day.

In the village of Steg — which is located in the municipality of Triesenberg south of the central part of the Principality of Liechtenstein — is the Tunnel Gnalp-Steg, which carries the main road between the capital city of Vaduz in the western part of the country near Switzerland and Malbun in the eastern part of the country near Austria.

Opened in 1947 after construction first began in February of 1946, the Tunnel Gnalp-Steg is named because the village of Steg is to its east and the district of Gnalp is to its west — at a length of 740 meters, this tunnel is the longest road tunnel in the country — and as I drove through the tunnel to get from Vaduz to Malbun, I thought that the shape and structure of the tunnel was cool.

I found out after leaving Liechtenstein that this was a newer tunnel, as an older tunnel called Wiaga Tunnel — which was formerly used for the main route — is located approximately one quarter of a mile north of this tunnel. Although motorists no longer use that tunnel, walkers and bicyclists do use it.

Had I known about this other tunnel, I would have visited it while I was in Liechtenstein.

Final Boarding Call

No toll is required to use the Tunnel Gnalp-Steg.
