Countries With Travel Entry Restrictions Due to 2019 Novel Coronavirus: A Comprehensive List

A proposal from the European Union requests the suspension of all travel which is not essential from all countries and territories outside of the European Union — with the exception of the United Kingdom, which will still be permitted — to countries which are members of the European Union for 30 days.

Countries With Travel Entry Restrictions Due to 2019 Novel Coronavirus: A Comprehensive List

Ursula von der Leyen — who is the president of the European Union — called on the aforementioned proposal earlier today, Monday, March 16, 2020.

If placed in effect, that would be the latest in a plethora of temporary or permanent restrictions imposed by countries and territories around the world in response to the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus — which is also known as COVID-19 or 2019-nCoV — pandemic.

This article lists countries and territories in alphabetical order with the restrictions about which you should know as a traveler.

Asia

BAHRAIN
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • Visa on arrival program has been suspended.
BANGLADESH
  • Visa on arrival program has been suspended.
  • Travelers from Europe or who have recently been to Europe — except for the United Kingdom — are banned from entering the country.
BHUTAN
  • Travelers from the United Kingdom are banned from entering the country.
BRUNEI
  • Self monitoring is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
CAMBODIA
  • Foreign nationals arriving from Italy, Germany, Spain, France, and the United States are banned from entering the country for 30 days effective as of Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
CHINA
  • A mandatory quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors arriving in Beijing from destinations abroad at designated facilities starting Monday — and at the expense of the traveler.
  • International business travelers will be required to stay at a select number of designated hotel properties in Beijing where they will be tested for the 2019 Novel Coronavirus — and they will not be permitted to leave until their test results have been returned.
  • Passengers arriving from Iran, Italy, Japan, or South Korea and traveling to Beijing, Guangzhou, or Shanghai are subject to quarantine for 14 days.
HONG KONG
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for visitors entering from Ireland, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Egypt.
  • Passengers who have been in or through South Korea or the Hubei Province of China within the past 14 days — as well as Chinese nationals with a passport issued in Hubei — will not permitted entry.
  • Nationals and residents from Hong Kong are exempt and face a mandatory quarantine of 14 days instead.
  • Passengers arriving from China are subject to be quarantined.
  • Passengers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within the past 14 days are subject to be quarantined:
    • China
    • France — specifically, the Bourgogne-Franche-Comte and Grand Est regions
    • Germany — specifically, North Rhine-Westphalia regions
    • Iran
    • Italy
    • Japan — specifically, the Hokkaido region
    • Spain — specifically, the La Rioja, Madrid, and Pais Vasco regions of Spain — are subject to be quarantined
  • All passengers — except for holders of passports issued by Hong Kong, who are exempt — who have been in the following countries are not allowed to enter if their permitted stay in Hong Kong is fewer than 14 days:
    • China
    • Iran
    • Italy — specifically, the Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Veneto regions
INDIA
  • Travelers from all countries in the European Union, Turkey, and the United Kingdom are banned from entering the country effective as of Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
  • All tourist visas and electronic visas have been suspended and are invalid until Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
  • A mandatory quarantine of 14 days is in effect for anyone — including nationals from India — who has either recently visited or is arriving from the following countries:
    • China
    • Italy
    • Iran
    • South Korea
    • France
    • Spain
    • Germany
INDONESIA
  • Passengers and members of the flight crews of airlines — except for nationals and residents of Indonesia — who have been in the following countries within the past 14 days are not allowed to enter or transit through Indonesia:
    • China
    • Italy — affected regions only
    • South Korea — affected regions only
    • Iran — affected regions only
ISRAEL
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
JAPAN
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Iran
    • Italy
  • Nationals from Japan — as are their spouses and children — are exempt from the aforementioned policy if the relations are verified.
JORDAN
  • All commercial air travel of incoming and outgoing flights will cease effective as of tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17, 2020 until further notice — with the exception of air cargo flights.
  • All land, sea and air borders are closed to travelers — except to members of diplomatic missions and international organizations who will be exempt as long as they abide by the Ministry of Health stipulations for the 14 days of self-quarantine.
KUWAIT
  • Travelers from the United Kingdom are banned from entering the country.
LEBANON
  • Direct flights from affected countries will be suspended effective as of tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
  • Airlines which serve Beirut Rafic Hariri airport are being asked to refuse passengers who have been in the the following countries:
    • Egypt
    • France
    • Germany
    • Iraq
    • Spain
    • Syria
    • United Kingdom
MACAO
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the Hubei province of China within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country unless they can provide a medical certificate stating they have not been infected with 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 14 days prior to their arrival are required to undergo medical observation for 14 days at a designated venue:
    • Italy
    • Iran
    • South Korea
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 14 days prior to their arrival are required to submit to a medical examination as well as undergo medical observation for 14 days at a designated venue:
    • France
    • Germany
    • Japan
    • Spain
  • Residents of Macau who currently are or were in any of the affected areas will be requested to isolate themselves for two weeks upon their return.
MALDIVES
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • Bangladesh
    • China
    • Iran
    • Italy
    • South Korea — specifically, Gyeongsang
MALAYSIA
  • All travelers and visitors are banned from entering the country for 14 days effective as of Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
  • Large events are banned for 14 days effective as of Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — affected areas of the following countries recently are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Denmark
    • Iran
    • Italy
    • Japan
    • South Korea
  • All Malaysians returning from any of the aforementioned countries are required to quarantine themselves at home for 14 days.
OMAN
  • Travelers from the United Kingdom are banned from entering the country.
QATAR
  • Travelers from the United Kingdom are banned from entering the country.
PAKISTAN
  • International flights to airports which serve Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore are limited.
  • Some borders are closed.
SAUDI ARABIA
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • With the exception of nationals of Saudi Arabia, passengers and travelers who have been in — or transited through — affected areas of the following countries and territories within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • Bahrain
    • China
    • Djibouti
    • Egypt
    • Eritrea
    • Ethiopia
    • France
    • Germany

SINGAPORE
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • All visitors entering Singapore who have traveled recently to the following countries within the past 14 days will be issued with a “Stay-Home Notice” for 14 days and will have to provide proof of the place where they will stay:
    • Japan
    • Member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
    • Switzerland
    • United Kingdom
SOUTH KOREA
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the Hubei province of China within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country.
  • Visitors who hold passports which show that they are from the Hubei province of China are banned from entering the country.
  • Visas of visitors from South Korean which were issued by the Wuhan Consulate in the Hubei Province in China are invalidated — as are visas issued to nationals of Japan at Korean Diplomatic Missions in Japan prior to Monday, March 9, 2020. Members of the flight crews of airlines are exempt from this restriction.
  • All travelers from Europe will be required to go through temperature checks, a medical survey, and download a mobile software application program to their portable electronic devices so their temperatures can be monitored daily.
  • All travelers are also required to submit their reachable telephone numbers upon arrival.
SRI LANKA
  • Visa on arrival program is expected to be suspended or cancelled — but exactly when this policy will be in effect has not yet been confirmed at the time this article was written.
  • All passengers arriving from Italy, Iran, and South Korea will be quarantined for 14 days.
TAIWAN
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
TAJIKISTAN
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Iran
    • Italy
    • South Korea
THAILAND
  • Travelers who have recently been in countries which were affected by 2019 Novel Coronavirus require a health certificate stating that they are not affected by 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
  • Self monitoring is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • Large gatherings and major events — such as Songkran celebrations — have been postponed; and other large gatherings and major events are likely to be cancelled or postponed as well.
  • Visa exemption policies have been suspended for travelers from the following countries:
    • Hong Kong
    • Italy
    • South Korea
  • Visa on arrival has been stopped for the following 18 countries:
    • Bulgaria
    • Bhutan
    • China
    • Cyprus
    • Ethiopia
    • Fiji
    • Georgia

UZBEKISTAN
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
VIETNAM
  • All travelers and visitors who have been in the 26 countries in the Schengen Area of Europe — plus the United Kingdom — within the past 14 days will not be permitted to enter or transit through Vietnam for 30 days.
  • Visas upon arrival will also no longer be issued for all foreign nationals for 30 days.

ANGOLA
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries recently are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Iran
    • Italy
    • South Korea
BENIN
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors who have recently been in countries which have been affected by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
CONGO
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries recently are banned from entering the country:

COMOROS
  • Visitors must have spent a minimum of 14 days in a country without any cases of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus prior to arrival.
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors who have recently been in countries which have been affected by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
EGYPT
  • All air traffic — including all flights in and out of all airports in Egypt — will be suspended from Thursday, March 19, 2020 through Tuesday, March 31, 2020.
ERITREA
  • A quarantine of 14 days for all visitors and travelers who have recently been in the following countries:
    • China
    • Germany
    • Italy
    • South Korea
    • United States
ETHIOPIA
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors who have recently been in countries which have been affected by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
GUINEA
  • All visitors must submit their passports for monitoring for a period of 14 days.
MADAGASCAR
  • Commercial passenger flights to or from Europe will not operate for 30 days effective as of Friday, March 20, 2020.
MAURITIUS
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries recently are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Iran
    • Italy
    • South Korea
MOROCCO
  • All international flights to and from all airports in Morocco are suspended until further notice as part of measures to combat the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
MOZAMBIQUE
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors who have recently been in countries which have been affected by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
RWANDA
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors who have recently been in countries which have been affected by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
SENEGAL
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors who have recently been in countries which have been affected by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
SEYCHELLES
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries recently are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Iran
    • Italy

TUNISIA
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors who have recently been in countries which have been affected by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
UGANDA

AUSTRIA
  • No direct flights are available between Austria and the United Kingdom.
  • No direct air connections or railroad connections are available from Austria to the following countries:
    • France
    • Italy
    • Spain
    • Switzerland
  • Any visitors who travel from Italy by road will be stopped and checked at the border and must present a health certificate stating that they are not affected by 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
  • Ski resorts closed on Sunday, March 15, 2020 in Tirol, Salzburg and Vorarlberg.
  • Restaurants and shops are open at limited hours.
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries recently are banned from entering the country:
    • China — specifically, the Hubei Province
    • Iran
    • Italy
    • South Korea
  • Those people who have a medical certificate no more than four days old that confirms they are not affected by coronavirus. are exempt from the aforementioned policy.
  • Travel through Austria is possible — as long as no stops are made in the country.
BELGIUM
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.
  • Limited service is available for public transportation.
  • Large gatherings of people have been restricted.
  • Sports and cultural events are prohibited.
  • Some stores and shops may only be open for limited hours or closed altogether.
  • Screening the health of visitors is likely upon arrival.
BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • Some borders are closed.
  • Flight schedules are limited.
BULGARIA
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.
  • Limited service is available for public transportation.
  • Large gatherings of people have been restricted.
  • Sports and cultural events are prohibited.
  • Some stores and shops may only be open for limited hours or closed altogether.
  • Screening the health of visitors is likely upon arrival.
CROATIA
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • Some borders are closed.
  • Flight schedules are limited.

Apart from Croatian nationals, passengers and airline crew who have been in China’s Hubei Province, Germany’s Heinsberg County, Iran, Italy, or South Korea’s Daegu City and Cheongdo province in the past 14 days will be placed in quarantine for 14 days. Nationals will be required to self-isolate.

Other than Croatian nationals, passengers and airline crew who have been in all other regions of China and South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.

CYPRUS
  • Travelers from the United Kingdom are banned from entering the country.
CZECH REPUBLIC

On Thursday, the Czech Republic declared a 30-day state of emergency and barred entry to non-residents from coronavirus-affected countries, as well as partially closing its borders. Outbound travel to high-risk countries is also banned.

The ban applies to visitors from China, South Korea, Iran, Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, UK, Norway, Denmark and France, and is in effect as of Saturday, March 14, 2020.

DENMARK
  • Closure of the border is in effect through Thursday, April 13, 2020. Danish citizens and those transporting goods will still be able to enter the country.
FRANCE
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.
  • Limited service is available for public transportation.
  • Large gatherings of people have been restricted.
  • Sports and cultural events are prohibited.
  • Some stores and shops may only be open for limited hours or closed altogether.
  • Screening the health of visitors is likely upon arrival.
GEORGIA
  • All travelers and visitors are banned from entering the country for two weeks effective as of Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
GERMANY
  • Germany has closed off its borders with Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, and Denmark.
  • Goods and commuters are exempt from the ban.
GREECE
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.
  • Limited service is available for public transportation.
  • Large gatherings of people have been restricted.
  • Sports and cultural events are prohibited.
  • Some stores and shops may only be open for limited hours or closed altogether.
  • Screening the health of visitors is likely upon arrival.
  • Greece will not be accepting any new asylum applications for a minimum of one month due to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic.
  • Land border restrictions with Austria, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, and Switzerland — for example, cross-border commuters and deliveries only — are in effect.
HUNGARY
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.

MOLDOVA

No direct flights to the rest of Europe.

Ban on entry to travellers who have been in China, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Macao, South Korea or Taiwan in the 14 days before arrival.

MONACO
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.
  • Limited service is available for public transportation.
  • Large gatherings of people have been restricted.
  • Sports and cultural events are prohibited.
  • Some stores and shops may only be open for limited hours or closed altogether.
  • Screening the health of visitors is likely upon arrival.
NETHERLANDS
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.
  • Limited service is available for public transportation.
  • Large gatherings of people have been restricted.
  • Sports and cultural events are prohibited.
  • Some stores and shops may only be open for limited hours or closed altogether.
  • Screening the health of visitors is likely upon arrival.
NORWAY

Anyone traveling to Norway from outside the Nordic region must self-isolate for two weeks. The restrictions put in place March 12 are scheduled to last until March 26.

PORTUGAL
  • Land border restrictions with Spain — for example, cross-border commuters and deliveries only — are in effect.
ROMANIA
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.
  • Limited service is available for public transportation.
  • Large gatherings of people have been restricted.
  • Sports and cultural events are prohibited.
  • Some stores and shops may only be open for limited hours or closed altogether.
  • Screening the health of visitors is likely upon arrival.
RUSSIA

Self-quarantine of 14 days for travelers who have recently been in China, Italy, Iran, France, Germany, South Korea or Spain. All borders closed except with Azerbaijan and Finland.

Nationals of China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iran and Italy are now allowed in Russia, but exemptions are made for airline crew and foreign nationals resident in Russia.

Passengers who have been in China, France, Germany, South Korea or Spain and are planning to stay in Moscow must report themselves to the authorities by phone and stay self-isolated for 14 days.

Russia closed its border with Belarus because of the pandemic following the earlier closure of its land border with China.

SPAIN

A state of emergency has already been declared in Spain and strict lockdown policies including restrictions on travel in and out of the country are expected.

Borders between Spain and Portugal are closed, leaving only nine active crossings open to allow for the transit of products and workers who are required to cross the border.

SWITZERLAND
  • Restaurants and bars have been ordered closed.
  • Limited service is available for public transportation.
  • Large gatherings of people have been restricted.
  • Sports and cultural events are prohibited.
  • Some stores and shops may only be open for limited hours or closed altogether.
  • Screening the health of visitors is likely upon arrival.
TURKEY

Some flights to Europe suspended. Ban on entry to travelers who have been in or transited through China, Iran, Italy or South Korea in the 14 days before arrival.

Turkey has halted travel to and from nine European countries: Germany, Spain, France, Austria, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands. Nationals of those countries are not allowed to enter the country.

Passengers who have transited through or been in Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, South Korea or Sweden in the past 14 days are not allowed to enter or transit through Turkey.

Turkish nationals and residents are exempt.

UKRAINE
  • Travelers from the United Kingdom are banned from entering the country.

Ukraine International Airlines has suspended all international scheduled flights starting March 17 through March 31, following the Ukraine’s government decision to temporarily ban entry to people who are not Ukraine citizens or residents.

North America

ARUBA

TRINIDAD and TOBAGO
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • France
    • Germany
    • Italy
    • Iran
    • Japan
    • Singapore
    • South Korea
UNITED STATES

Foreign nationals are banned from traveling from 28 countries in the Schengen Area free movement zone: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The ban did not apply to American citizens or their family members.

The US already has other restrictions in place.

Passengers who’ve been in China and Iran in the last 14 days will not be allowed to enter.
US citizens who’ve been in China in the past 14 days can enter the US, but will be directed via one 11 airports where they’ll undergo health screening. The airports include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York (JFK or EWR), San Francisco, Seattle and Washington.

TURKS and CAICOS
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 21 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Italy
    • Iran
    • Japan
    • Macao
    • Singapore
    • South Korea

AUSTRALIA
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
  • All cruise ships are banned from docking in Australia.
  • Passengers who have been in China, Iran, South Korea or Italy in the last 14 days are not allowed to enter or transit through Australia for 14 days, from the time they exited those countries. This does not apply to airline crew, Australian nationals and their immediate family members, or New Zealand nationals resident in Australia, who are instead required to self-isolate for 14 days.
FIJI
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Italy
    • Iran
    • South Korea
FRENCH POLYNESIA
  • A health certificate is required of all travelers and visitors which states that they do not have 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
KIRIBATI
  • Visitors must have spent 14 days in a country without any cases of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus prior to arrival.
MICRONESIA
  • Visitors must have spent 14 days in a country without any cases of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus prior to arrival.
NEW ZEALAND
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
TONGA
  • Visitors must have spent 14 days in a country without any cases of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus prior to arrival.
NAURU
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 21 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Hong Kong
    • Italy
    • Iran
    • Macao
    • South Korea
PALAU
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Hong Kong
    • Macao
SOLOMON ISLANDS
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for all visitors.
VANUATU
  • Travelers who have been in — or transited through — the following countries within 14 days prior to arrival are banned from entering the country:
    • China
    • Hong Kong
    • Japan
    • Macao
    • Singapore
    • South Korea
    • Taiwan

COLOMBIA
  • Passengers are required fill in a health registration form upon arrival and isolate themselves for 14 days if arriving from the following countries:
    • China
    • France
    • Italy
    • Spain
  • Travelers from Venezuela are banned from entering the country, as the border with Venezuela is currently closed.
PERU
  • Flights to and from Europe and Asia have been suspended effective as of today, Monday, March 16, 2020 for a period of 30 days.
URUGUAY
  • Self quarantine is in effect for 14 days for visitors who have recently been in the following countries:
    • China
    • France
    • Germany
    • Iran
    • Italy
    • Japan
    • Singapore
    • South Korea
