Forethoughts and Foreheads: If I Can’t Laugh at Myself…

Anyone who knows me personally knows that I like to tease them — even to the point of being incessant — and no one is usually exempt from it…

…not even myself.

Forethoughts and Foreheads: If I Can’t Laugh at Myself…

As I was driving south on North Main Street through downtown Panguitch in Utah and approaching Center Street to turn left in order to remain traveling on United States Highway 89 towards Red Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Park — and, eventually, the Rodeway Inn Bryce Canyon hotel property later that night — I noticed the overhead highway signs which are shown in the photograph below.

At the bottom of the sign on the right was the name Brian Head, of which I had never heard before — and yes, in this article, the arrow is indeed pointing to the top where my photograph is displayed.

I then thought of the readers of The Gate who have poked fun at my forehead in the past — even the state of Utah apparently seems to have something to say about it — and I chuckled at the thought: why not have a little fun at my own expense?

Just to show that I have no hard feelings, here are some of the unedited comments — both serious and in terms of conveying levity — which readers of The Gate have posted over the years:

  • Brent Bendick“Why the self absobed pic of your massive forehead? I’m fat bald and ugly…I would never….sorry dude…you need a new approach”
  • James Trevelyen“Hi Brian. My favourite tower used to be your forehead, but it is now the Chicken Zinger Tower.”
  • Miguel“Your forehead is click bait enough! I can’t get enough of it (in fact, I got a larger monitor so I could see all of it).”
  • Ace“Just so I’m clear, was this article the product of your giant shiny forehead that you, for some reason, feel the need to expose or…did you maybe, just maybe, catch it on a cable comedy show this weekend?”
  • Asa“Your giant forehead is the main attraction of the site, but your amusing command of English is a close second.”
  • Charles Deegan: “Brian, you really need to consider removing your giant forehead from you website graphics. Not only is it physically unsettling, but I doubt it is appropriate for small children.”
  • claire watts“your large forehead and receding hairline really give people nightmares. please change the logo.”

If I cannot laugh at myself, then what is the point?

Consider this a present for 2020 — especially with the way this year has gone for many people. Sometimes we take life way too seriously; and we could all use a good laugh lately. I hope you enjoyed a good laugh; or that this article brightened your day — even if only a little bit.

Merry Christmas.
