Four Additional Symptoms Now Associated With 2019 Novel Coronavirus

…but as people with 2019 Novel Coronavirus have reported a wide range of symptoms — ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness — within the past few months, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated the possible symptoms by stating that people who have contracted the 2019 Novel Coronavirus now includes:

  • Fever
  • Chills — especially with repeated shaking
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion — New for July of 2020
  • Runny nose — New for July of 2020
  • Nausea or vomiting — New for July of 2020
  • Diarrhea — New for July of 2020

When to Seek Medical Attention for Possible Exposure to 2019 Novel Coronavirus

To worsen matters, the lists which are included in this article are not all inclusive; so please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms which are severe or concerning to you.

Symptoms may appear between two days and 14 days after exposure to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus — but seek medical attention immediately if you have any of these emergency warning signs:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion or inability to arouse
  • Bluish lips or face
  • Inability to wake or stay awake — New for July of 2020

Summary

For any medical emergency, call 911; and if you believe you may have contracted the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, notify the operator that you have it — or think you might have it. If possible, cover your face with a cloth covering prior to the arrival of medical help.

Remember that you can prevent — or, at least, reduce the risk of — contracting infectious microbes such as the 2019 Novel Coronavirus by properly washing your hands regularly, not touching any part of your face or head with hands or fingers which may be contaminated, and maintaining a safe distance of at least six feet from other people. Wearing a mask or cloth covering for your face is also recommended.

I am concerned that as more symptoms become associated with the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, it may be more difficult to definitively diagnose — or perhaps mistakenly list a different illness as a 2019 Novel Coronavirus case…

…meaning we are likely in for a lot of fun when influenza season returns later this year.

At the time this article was written, at least 570,288 people — or slightly less than 4.40 percent — have died of the minimum of 12,964,809 confirmed cases worldwide, according to this situation dashboard from the World Health Organization pertaining to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
