Hurricane Norma to Impact Baja California in Mexico: October 2023 Travel Alert

This tropical system will disrupt Norma life in central western Mexico.

Due to the effects from Hurricane Norma to impact Baja California in Mexico October 2023, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — if this region is in your travel plans over the next few days.

Hurricane Norma to Impact Baja California in Mexico: October 2023 Travel Alert

Maximum sustained winds of Hurricane Norma — which is currently approximately 175 miles south of Cabo San Lucas and moving north northwest at a speed of eight miles per hour — are at 120 miles per hour, which classifies this tropical system as a Category 3 hurricane with a distinct eye; and landfall is expected to occur as a weakened but still strong hurricane at Cabo San Lucas as early as noon tomorrow, Saturday, October 21, 2023.

Up to as much as 15 inches of rain can fall in local areas of across the far southern portion of California Baja Sur.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for:

  • Baja California Sur from Todos Santos to Los Barriles

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • North of Los Barriles to San Evaristo
  • North of Todos Santos to Santa Fe

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for:

  • Topolobampo to Bahia Tempehuaya
  • Las Islas Marias

A storm surge, large swells of surf, mudslides in higher elevations, localized flash flooding, strong rip currents, windy conditions, and the aforementioned significant precipitation are all possible. Electrical power outages are likely to occur; and an isolated tornado may be possible.

If you are traveling to Baja California in Mexico or western central Mexico over the next few days, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this tropical weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

  • United Airlines has issued a travel alert for Cabo San Lucas for Saturday, October 21, 2023; and Saturday, October 28, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Alaska Airlines has issued travel alerts for Los Cabos, Loreto, and Mazatlan for Friday, October 20, 2023 through Monday, October 23, 2023; and Thursday, October 26, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Southwest Airlines has issued a travel alert for Los Cabos for Saturday, October 21, 2023 through Sunday, October 22, 2023; and Sunday, November 5, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • JetBlue Airways has issued a travel alert for Los Cabos for Saturday, October 21, 2023 through Sunday, October 22, 2023; and Wednesday, October 25, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Spirit Airlines has issued a travel alert for Los Cabos for Saturday, October 21, 2023; and Friday, October 27, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • WestJet Airways has issued a travel alert for San Jose del Cabo for Saturday, October 21, 2023 through Sunday, October 22, 2023.
