Find the Antipode of Many Places Around the World

Plus, try out the “toughest geography quiz.”

If you have ever wanted to find the antipode of many places around the world, you can do so in seconds with a nifty Internet web site.

Find the Antipode of Many Places Around the World

The definition of antipode is the exact opposite point on the surface of the Earth from any given location. For example, if an imaginary straight line was drawn from where you are located through the center of the Earth, that line would emerge at its antipode on the other side of the world — such as that old adage about digging a hole in the ground all the way to China.

FurthestCity is a simple yet fun tool that can be used to find the antipode of any city in the world which has a population of greater than 100,000 people. You first select a country from one pop-up list; and then you choose a city in a different pop-up list to find its antipode. As a result, four lists of furthest cities:

  • Furthest cities with a population greater than 100,000 people
  • Furthest cities with a population greater than 1,000,000 people
  • Furthest capital cities
  • A list of furthest cities if any are available

Perth in Australia is a good example of how FurthestCity works, as it is the furthest city to 179 other cities — mostly in the United States.

Final Boarding Call

The aforementioned Internet web site is not very precise in that it does not go by exact coordinates of latitude and longitude — nor can it find the exact antipode of locations around the world with fewer than 100,000 people — but it is a fun tool that will quickly bring up information pertaining to the city that you choose.

As a bonus, you can also take what FurthestCity calls its toughest geography quiz. Do you think you can handle it?
