The airport will not reopen until at least tomorrow morning.

Consider ensuring that you have alternate plans ready to be implemented in case your travels are adversely affected because Fort Lauderdale airport is closed April 13 2023 today due to severe weather and is not scheduled to reopen until 9:00 in the morning tomorrow, Friday, April 14, 2023.

Fort Lauderdale Airport Closed April 13 2023 Due to Severe Weather: Travel Alert

The following statement is currently posted at the official Twitter account of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport of the United States:

Due to the volume of flooding and debris on FLL’s airfields, the airport will remain closed for flight activity today, Thursday, April 13, until 5AM, Friday, April 14, 2023. This will allow airport staff to work to restore partial operations on one runway, providing current conditions do not worsen. Travelers should not come to the airport prior to checking with their airlines for updated flight status.

WSVN-TV Channel 7 News provided a video of the flooding of the airport.

The Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area suffered from a deluge of almost 26 inches of rain yesterday, Wednesday, April 12, 2023 — which would historically be the most precipitation ever recorded for a period of 24 hours — and forced the airport to close. At one point, tornado warnings were issued for the airport and surrounding areas.

A flash flood emergency was issued by the National Weather Service for much of Broward County as a result…

…and schools are closed for today.

Travel has been affected accordingly, as hundreds of passenger are stranded in airports around the country trying to get to south Florida — such as in Boston.
