Could strong solar flares be the culprit?

A major service outage has been reported today, February 22 2024 across the United States by hundreds of thousands of users of the technology of different companies — most notably, the mobile and Internet services of AT&T — so please be aware that you may not have service if you are traveling to areas of the country that are adversely affected.

No reason has been officially given as to why this widespread outage is occurring — although two strong solar flares may be to blame, as reported by the Solar Dynamics Observatory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States, which is more popularly known as NASA.

“The Sun emitted two strong solar flares, the first one peaking at 6:07 p.m. EST on Feb. 21, 2024, and the second peaking at 1:32 a.m. EST on Feb. 22, 2024. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the Sun constantly, captured an image of the event”, according to this article from an official weblog of NASA. “Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy. Flares and solar eruptions can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.”

No word has been given as to when service will be restored.
