Warning: Hertz Changed Points Expiration Policy 2023 With No Notice Or Warning

Points are disappearing from membership accounts without warning as well.

If you thought your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points do not expire until 18 months after your most recent rental of a vehicle, think again: Hertz changed its points expiration policy 2023 with no notice or warning to only twelve months.

According to the current exact verbiage at the official Internet web site of Hertz:

Points do not expire if you have a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards® rental activity in the prior 12 months. Activity means a Gold Plus Rewards® point was either earned or redeemed on a rental. A Gold Plus Rewards point may only be earned or redeemed on a completed rental. Making a reservation or points transfer to a partner company does not count as rental activity.

Some members of FlyerTalk have found that their points have already disappeared, thinking that they still had time to keep them active:

Unfortunately, points did expire if you did not have a Gold Plus Rewards rental activity in the prior 12 months. We did extend this to 18 months during the pandemic but, points now expire within 12 months. Activity means a Gold Plus Rewards point was either earned or redeemed on a rental. A Gold Plus Rewards point may only be earned or redeemed on a completed rental. We apologize, but making a reservation or points transfer to a partner company does not count as rental activity. Typically, you should receive a notification about a month prior about your expiring points to the email address on file. I do apologize if you did not receive this notification.

That Hertz changed its points expiration policy 2023 with no notice or warning is the latest in a spate of incredibly unfriendly moves by Hertz in recent years regarding its customer service. I experience poor customer service from Hertz last year. Thankfully, it was finally resolved in my favor — but not before a lot of time and effort was expended.

Although Hertz has every right to change the terms and conditions — as well as the expiration date — of its Gold Plus Rewards membership program, doing so without any communication with its customers whatsoever is wholly unacceptable and inexcusable.

Thankfully, my Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points do not expire until June of 2014 under the currently revised policy — but they may change the policy again without notice before then. Who knows…?

If your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points expired after twelve months, you might be able to request one of those condescending “one-time exceptions” as though they are performing a great favor to you. If so, take it and run.

  1. I had only enough points for a one day rental because I typically burn Hertz points. During the pandemic, I asked for an extension in expiration date, which they granted to some other people, but they refused to do so. As a result, I do not rent from Hertz unless I really need to.

I could have redeemed the award just before the pandemic began, but the rental rates in January 2020 were so low that I didn’t want to redeem an award for a car that cost less than $25/day. In retrospect, I should have.

  2. Hertz is by far the least trustworthy rental company. A few years ago I received a 840$ settlement from a class action suit after they were found guilty of false advertising in Central America. They were know to bait and switch leaving tourists in a dilemma, with few options but to have to either pay more than quoted or scramble to find transportation. My advice to to avoid Hertz

  3. Lost 2 weeks worth of points during the pandemic. I will never rent from the company again. Also with United Airlines shifting from Hertz to Avis for status it was a no brainer
